Q. I have been very pleased with the size of my breasts but now as I'm turning 40 they're beginning to really sag. What can be done, how long is the operation and what's the cost?
A. What you are asking about is called a Mastopexy, a procedure for uplifting the breasts. The breast tissue is maintained but the nipple is relocated upward and the skin envelope of the breast is reduced. The nipple-areolar complex remains connected to all of the breast's glandular tissue, of course. The result is an improved, conical-shaped breast. If breast enlargement is also desired, a saline-filled or silicone-filled implant can be added at the same time. The Mastopexy procedure takes about two and a half hours.
Q. I have very large breasts, 44DD and they're not just uncomfortable. I'm in real pain. I have shoulder strap grooves from my bra and chronic neck and back pain. Can plastic surgery help me and is it affordable?
A. Yes, there is a plastic surgery procedure for dealing with this very real problem. It's called a Reduction Mammaplasty and is considered an acceptable and safe means of handling the problem. The procedure has enjoyed significant improvement over the pat 20 years and, good news, it is considered functional by most medical insurance companies and thus may qualify for coverage of the surgical cost. Exact amount of coverage depends on the size of the breasts, proof of discomfort and pain (usually through physician provided photos of grooves and breasts), and finally, the estimated grams of fat the surgeon plans to remove.
The procedure is performed in an ambulatory surgical center or hospital under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes incisions that follow breast tissue, fat, and skin on the sides of the breasts. The nipple, areola complex and underlying tissue are then relocated upward and the breasts recontoured. Overly-large areolae may be reduced in size, proportionately with the smaller breasts. Following surgery, and sometimes after an overnight stay, the patient goes home with light dressings and a special bra. Sutures are removed within 10 days. It is gratifying to witness mammaplasty patient's relief from the pain and their genuine amazement at finally having what most women consider normal...normal size breasts.
Reconstruction of a breast that has been removed due to cancer or other disease is one of the most rewarding surgical procedures available today. New medical techniques and devices have made it possible for surgeons to create a breast that can come close in form and appearance to matching a natural breast. Frequently, reconstruction is possible immediately following breast removal (mastectomy), so the patient wakes up with a breast mound already in place, having been spared the experience of seeing herself with no breast at all.
