Eyelid Surgery / Ear Surgery

Eyelid Surgery

"Bags" under the eyes become quite common as we get older, and are caused by excess skin or fat in the eyelid. Eyelid surgery can remove excess fat and skin, and lighten the underlying muscles as needed. Patients report looking "fresher" and "more alert" after eyelid surgery. Sometimes, what is needed is not eyelid surgery, but a brow lift. A brow lift, which smooths and suspends the forehead, can also eliminate the overhang effect in the upper eye region and improve that droopy, "sad" look.

Eyelid Surgery Can Provide That Youthful, Fresh-Faced Look

Q. People comment that I look tired all the time. I suspect it's my eyes. I don't want to change the way I look really. I just want to look rested and energetic. What can I do?

A.If you have bags under your eyes or hooded upper lids, or both, eyelid surgery certainly will take care of those baggy eyelids. The procedure's medical name is "Blepharoplasty". Surgery of the eyelids is still the second most common cosmetic procedure (behind liposuction) with more than 50,000 people in the U.S., choosing to have it performed each year by members of the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. Excess, baggy eyelid skin or puffy fat in the eyelids are conditions which give a tired look to the entire face and can be readily corrected with eyelid surgery. Some people are born with fat pads in both the lower and upper lids, which become more noticeable with age. They can be removed through a small incision made at the lash line or inside the eyelid. The resulting effect is a fresh-faced look normally achieved by taking a vacation or a long rest, but this result lasts a long time. Some patients find that a browlift accomplishes the lift they require in the upper eye region and the lower eyes can often be improved with Laser Surgery for the bags under the eyes and the crow's feet around the eyes.

Ears (Otoplasty)

Protruding Ears Can Be Put In Their Proper Place With An Otoplasty

Otoplasty is a form of ear surgery performed to set disproportionately large or prominent ears closer to the head. There are several possible surgical approaches to otoplasty. Using a commonly employed technique, the surgeon makes incisions in the back of the ear and removes skin to expose ear cartilage. Then, the surgeon uses sutures to fold the cartilage in on itself to reshape the ear. The incisions are closed with sutures.

Q. I am concerned about my child who is entering first grade. He has very large protruding ears and his friends are beginning to tease him. I have spoken with my husband about plastic surgery to "pin the ears back" because we don't want him to grow up to be excessively self-conscious. What would you suggest?

A. Your problem can be very satisfactorily resolved with a procedure called Otoplasty. Otoplasty places the ears closer to the side of the head. The operation takes about an hour and a half to correct both ears and it can be done with either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation.

With children, we usually use a pediatric anesthesiologist and give light general anesthesia in combination with local anesthesia. The procedure involves reshaping the cartilage of the ear with a small incision in the back of the ear. The child will return to normal activities in about a week or so, wearing a head band.
